    Have Fun

    Make use of props and different locations, and simply let your subjects have fun. Props like a pink or blue ribbon tied around the baby’s belly block spelling the baby’s name, or small shoes sitting on the belly are entertaining. Try going to places that the whole family will enjoy, such as a park or a fun place to relax. It can be entertaining to take pictures of the mother’s growing belly; look for creative ways to do this. Assist your subject in having fun, learning their story, and capturing their smiles.

     Encourage the mother to do what makes her feel beautiful

    Women in general, especially pregnant women, will feel more comfortable and confident with a little extra sparkle on the day of the photos, whether she has her hair or makeup done or buys a new outfit.

    Be strategic and aware

    Be aware of the flattering and unflattering positions that highlight specific body features. Avoid angles that define sensitive areas for women. My face was particularly pudgy when I was pregnant. I felt as if I were stuffed inside a fat suit, which bothered me; I didn’t want to appear that way.

    If I were to choose a maternity session pose for myself, I would try to shoot down on myself and have myself look up towards the camera. If I was shooting straight on, I would be aware of the camera angle and would look down gracefully to admire my bulging belly.

     Be encouraging

    Talk to your client and let her know when she looks particularly lovely. Show her the photo, if you have a good one, and help her realize how beautiful she is. The more confident you make her feel, the more confident she will be in front of the camera, and the more she will enjoy her photos.

     Shoot small details

    Tighten up on the belly. Take photos of the adorable baby items that have been lovingly arranged in the nursery. Pay attention to the details that your client has mentioned. These seemingly insignificant details are priceless and wonderful to remember.

  • Graduation Photography Tips

    A graduation is a once-in-a-lifetime event, and we’ve got 10 graduation photography tips to help you get great shots! A graduation is a life-changing event for students and their families. It’s a time for celebrations, award ceremonies, and family reunions, not to mention parties and family gatherings.

    Graduation is also an excellent time to take photographs that your family will treasure for a lifetime. We have some tips to help you capture excellent graduation photos, no matter what type of digital camera you’re using.

    Use a DSLR or Point & Shoot Camera

    For the vast majority of social occasions, we rely on our smartphones. Smartphone photos are fine for sharing online and on social media, but they don’t make the best prints or enlargements. You’ll want images that you can print and frame for graduation. Having said that, we recommend using a Digital SLR (DSLR) or, in the worst-case scenario, a Point & Shoot camera.

    The main benefits of using a DSLR camera over a smartphone camera are image quality and versatility. When reviewing our graduation photography tips, you’ll notice that some of the recommended settings are simply not available on a smartphone.

    Know your Camera Settings Inside & Out!

    You must be prepared for a variety of lighting conditions as well as fast-moving subjects (like the cap toss). Take some time to familiarise yourself with your camera before the graduation ceremony. Don’t put it off any longer. Graduation is probably not the best time to learn how to use your camera and memorize camera settings. Locate the camera manual and, if necessary, mark important pages. If you’re going to buy a new camera, try to do so at least a week in advance. Before the ceremony, practice using your new camera.

    Make sure you understand how to adjust the ISO and how to use the camera’s full automatic, aperture priority, shutter priority, or program presets modes (indoor, outdoor, etc.). Get acquainted with the flash as well (both automatic and manual). Although flash photography is prohibited during the ceremony, you can still take photos with the flash turned off. More advanced users may want to adjust the white balance and use manual mode. In that case, make sure you understand how to control the aperture settings, shutter speed, and the built-in light meter.

    Be Prepared

    Make sure the battery is fully charged! If you can, pick up an extra battery just in case. Transfer old images from memory cards and reformat them in preparation for the big day. Even better, buy an extra memory card in case something goes wrong. Don’t forget to clean the camera lens with special photography lens paper and cleaner (no, your t-shirt will not suffice).

    Consider renting a telephoto lens if graduation ceremonies are being held in a large venue with hundreds or thousands of attendees (and you’re using a DSLR). Just make sure to practise beforehand and use a faster shutter speed.

    If possible, plan ahead of time with the graduate and devise a small strategy to ensure you get all of the shots you want. Inform the graduate of your location so that they can look at the camera as they pass by. Ask the graduate to talk to his or her friends about posing for pictures with classmates before and after the ceremony.

    Shoot High Resolution Images

    Shoot at the highest possible resolution (preferably RAW format). Typically, photos taken with a digital camera are saved in the JPEG compressed format. The data in compressed JPEG files has been lost and cannot be recovered. JPEGs can also be edited later using photo editing software such as Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop, but there are limitations.

    RAW image files, on the other hand, are uncompressed and result in higher-quality images. They also generate massive file sizes, so make sure you have plenty of memory cards. The ability to correct mistakes is the primary benefit of shooting in RAW. It’s always reassuring to know that you can save a potentially great shot if it comes out underexposed.

    RAW allows you to make significant adjustments to exposure, shadows, saturation, colors, and much more. While a JPEG can be used to make some of the same adjustments, your options are limited.

    Establishing Shots

    An establishing shot in filmmaking establishes the context for a scene by displaying the relationship between its key figures and objects. These opening shots are used to inform viewers, among other things, of the location of the scene. Consider photographing a graduation announcement, the cap, and gown on a hanger (for more information, see the next tip), the school sign, a decorated table before the party, or a cake.

    Take pictures of the auditorium or stage before the ceremonies, if possible. Taking established shots will help you tell the story of your wedding and will be useful if you want to create a multimedia slideshow.

    Photograph the Gown

    Every school has its own colors, and if your loved one is graduating with special honors, they will be wearing colorful honor cords to commemorate their accomplishments. So take a picture of the gown with the school colors prominently displayed. You can take a picture by a window, next to a lamp (remember to set your white balance), or with a flash.

    Graduation Ceremony Shots

    Taking photos at a graduation ceremony can be difficult. It’s sometimes better to let the designated professional photographer handle the details. However, if you’re up for the challenge, you’ll discover that the lighting isn’t always ideal, and you’ll most likely be too far away from the podium for your flash to work.

    You’ll most likely need to increase your ISO to at least 400, and possibly up to 1,000 or more. You might be able to get some good shots at the start and end of the ceremony. Position yourself in an aisle seat so you can photograph the graduate as he or she enters and exits. Graduation photography is sometimes about being in the right place at the right time.

    Remember to adjust the white balance. Because tungsten or sodium vapour lights are commonly used in gymnasiums, the white balance range is between 2,500 and 3,500K. Before the ceremony, take a few test shots and experiment with different white balance settings. When it comes time for the graduate to walk across the stage and receive their diploma, make sure you’re prepared.

    If your camera has the option, try setting the shutter to shoot in continuous burst mode so you can take multiple photos while holding down the shutter button. Because everything happens in a matter of seconds, shooting continuously will ensure that you get plenty of shots.

    The Hat Toss

    Most graduates will toss their caps in the air at the end of the ceremony to commemorate their final graduation. Even for professional photographers, this is a difficult shot. Prepare yourself and do your best to capture the action. Everything happens in the blink of an eye!

    To take multiple photos, try increasing your shutter speed and using continuous burst mode.

    Post Graduation Ceremony

    Congratulations! You made it through the ceremony and hopefully got some great pictures. You can now unwind a little and take photos with family and friends. Don’t forget to reset your white balance if you went from indoors to outdoors. If you’re shooting outside, you can use a lower ISO to get higher-quality images.     Graduation Party Time

    After commencement exercises, the graduate will most likely be rushing out the door for Grad Night! Remember to take pictures before the graduate removes their cap and gown.     Autumn has finally arrived! It’s one of the most colourful and photogenic seasons of the year for photographers. Whether you’re a novice photographer or a seasoned pro, almost anyone can capture the season’s rich warm colours and tones.

    If you live in New England or the Northeast, you’re probably experiencing some of the best fall foliage in the country. Regardless of where you live, autumn photography provides numerous opportunities to capture the changing colours of the season. We’ve compiled a list of ten pointers to help you make the most of your autumn photography experience.

    10 Autumn Photography Tips

    1. Planning

    Before you load up your camera gear and hit the road in search of the perfect shooting location, you should have a good idea of where you’re going to capture all those spectacular fall colours. If you don’t have a specific destination in mind, do some preliminary research so you can spend more time capturing images rather than scouting locations. For ideas and inspiration, one option is to search Flickr or Google by location.

    2. White Balance

    Use a color temperature meter to set the white balance before shooting. Rather than spending hundreds of dollars on a high-priced hand-held light and color temperature meter, try a smartphone app.

    Smartphone white balance apps are surprisingly accurate and surprisingly cheap. Check out Jonathan Zdziarski’s White Balance Meter (for iOS) or White Balance Color Temp Meter (for Android) (for Android).

    3. Composition

    Remember the Rule of Thirds in Photography and avoid having the horizon run through the centre of your image. Include an object of interest in the foreground, such as a log, large stone, or plant, to create a sense of perspective.

    Look for barns, bridges, churches, hillsides, tree-lined streets and roads, and rivers and streams. In the foreground, use the lines and curves of roads, paths, rivers, and streams to guide the viewer to the subject in the background.

    4. Reflections

    Use reflections from water to add a creative touch to your autumn photography. Fall colours can be seen reflected in creeks, lakes, rivers, and ponds. A tranquil lake’s still waters can produce a stunning mirror-like reflection.

    Don’t limit yourself to water that is perfectly still. Running waters can also create abstract patterns that reflect autumn colours.

    5. Close-ups

    Use your marco setting or a telephoto lens to capture stunning details of the trees and leaves.

    6. Depth of Field

    Choosing the best aperture for landscape photography is heavily influenced by your lens and the composition of your shot. Use a smaller aperture, such as f11 or f16, to get the entire scene in focus for most landscape shots. These apertures will provide you with the most depth of field.

    TIP: Avoid using the maximum setting (such as f22) because most lenses do not perform at their best when using minimum or maximum apertures (1.4 to f22).

    7. ISO Setting

    Shoot at the lowest ISO range possible to capture those stunning autumn colours while minimising noise (100-400).

    8. RAW files

    Shoot in RAW to be able to correct or fine-tune your images using the camera’s photo editing software or third-party applications such as Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop. RAW files take up a lot of space, so bring plenty of memory cards.

    9. Tripod

    Use a tripod or monopod to stabilize your camera and eliminate camera shake.

    10. Self-Timer Release

    In low-light situations, use the Self-Timer Release mode to postpone the shutter release for a few seconds after pressing the shutter button. This eliminates the possibility of camera movement and allows you to capture tack-sharp images.

    A cloudy day can be a great day for photography. A partly cloudy springtime day is a fantastic opportunity for cloud photography and creating truly compelling images as we transition from winter to summer.

    A photo taken in the early evening with a deep blue sky and bright flaming orange clouds simply cannot be beaten. Dramatic cloud formations can be a significant compositional element in your photographs, adding contrast and vibrancy.

    Photography on a Cloudy Day

    Everyone enjoys a lovely, clear, and sunny day. However, direct sunlight and harsh shadows cast by the sun can sometimes produce unflattering images. Some landscape photos can look a little boring without clouds, forcing photographers to rely on other composition elements.

    Regardless of how well you plan, there is no guarantee that you will get awesome cloud formations and just the right light to create memorable images. Following weather forecasts could provide you with insight into potential cloud formations.

    Unfortunately, there is no way to predict cloud movement or how light will pass through clouds. It only takes a little forethought and a little luck to take great photos on a cloudy day. But don’t give up if it doesn’t work out. Be patient and continue to try.

    Nature will eventually reward you for your efforts, and you will end up with some stunning photographs. Unfortunately, not all cloudy days are conducive to photography. Gray, overcast days with no features or shape to the clouds can be quite boring. However, days like these may produce ideal lighting for photographing flowers.

    Timing

    Everything begins with being in the right place at the right time. You must position yourself with your camera at the crack of dawn if you want to capture morning clouds at sunrise. To photograph a beautiful sunset, on the other hand, you must be patient and wait until sundown, and often much later.

    Sometimes the best times to photograph clouds are before, during, and after sunrise, before, during, and after sunset, before, during, and after a storm, and sometimes just after a storm.

    Composition

    Point your lens up if the sky is cloudy. Using the Rule of Thirds as a guide, compose your shot so that the sky fills the upper two-thirds of the frame. Use the clouds as your main subject and foreground of an ocean, lake, valley floor, hills, or mountain range.

    High Contrast

    The sky is usually several stops brighter than your foreground. The contrast between the sky and your foreground can be quite large (up to 5 stops). If you expose for the mountains, for example, the sky will be blown out and overexposed.

    However, exposure to the sky can result in a nice mountain silhouette. A Graduated Neutral Density Filter is used by experienced photographers. These filters darken specific areas of an image, such as bright skies, while leaving the rest of the image exposed normally.

    When photographing lightning, the best way to stay safe is to be in a structure or under an object that shields you from a direct strike. You should not use trees as cover because if one is struck by lightning, the electricity will travel through the roots and into you. During a lightning storm, it is recommended that you stay at least 50 feet away from both water and tall trees.

    You should also avoid being out in the open, as this makes you the tallest thing in the area and a prime target for a lightning strike. Staying inside a building or car is the safest option. Remember that, while these lightning photographs are stunning, they are not worth jeopardizing your life for.

    Where should you set up for lightning photography?

    Aside from safety concerns, you may be wondering where to photograph lightning. The great thing about it is that a lightning storm can happen almost anywhere, but depending on where you live, you may have to wait until the right time of year, and it’s also important to consider what you have in your foreground. This necessitates some forethought ahead of time.

    Before a lightning storm arrives, scout out potential locations. They should be close enough to your home that you won’t have to travel far to get there and set up to capture the best lightning strikes. The best locations provide a good view of a large portion of the sky while also providing interesting foreground details.

    And don’t forget rule #1–make sure there’s a safe place where you can set up, even if it’s just positioning your car so that you get the best view while shooting from the window without risking a lightning strike.

    Tripod–A tripod is also required because you’ll need a slower shutter speed to capture those awesome lightning photos you’ve seen. Your lightning images will most likely be blurry due to a camera shake if you don’t use a tripod. Even if you have a steady hand, it’s unlikely that you’ll be able to capture those crystal clear lightning bolts that are so detailed.

    Lenses—When photographing lightning, you’ll need a variety of lenses. A fast lens is essential, but you’ll also likely want a zoom lens rather than a prime lens. This will give you more options for photographing lightning at different distances. A wide-angle lens, on the other hand, is required if you want to capture the breadth of the storm–the grand scene with the towering storm clouds. Because you can capture more of the sky in the shot, a wide-angle lens reduces the guesswork about where the lightning will strike.

    Cable release or infrared remote–Using a cable release or an infrared remote, you can take the shot without touching your camera. This is significant because even a light touch can cause a camera shake.

    Flashlight–You’ll use this to see where you’re walking in low light, as well as a light source to ‘paint’ your foreground. The resulting lightning photograph will be even more dramatic as a result.

    Lens cloth or towel–Because you’ll most likely be photographing lightning in the rain, you’ll need these to keep your lens clean. A single raindrop on your lens can ruin your shot.

    What camera settings are best for shooting lightning?

    When shooting lightning, there are several options to consider. It also matters whether you’re shooting during the day or at night, but the following settings will help you get the best images:

    Manual Mode–You’ll set your camera to full manual mode because your camera’s automatic settings are unlikely to produce good images in the lighting conditions you’ll encounter when photographing storms or at night. This is especially true because the lighting will change as the lightning strike illuminates the sky.

    Focus–You should first set your lens to manual focus and then set the focus to infinity. This indicates that the lens is focused on the distant horizon. If you’re shooting at night, you’ll definitely need manual focus because most digital cameras can’t automatically acquire focus in low light.

    ISO–The sensitivity of your camera to available light. Set this to ‘base’ for your camera, which will most likely be between ISO 64 and 200. The default ISO setting on most Nikon and Canon cameras is 100.

    Shutter speed–Because of the low light conditions, you’ll need a slower shutter speed, which means you’ll have the shutter open for longer. Usually, anywhere between 5 and 30 seconds will suffice. If you want the foreground to appear much darker–that dramatic silhouette–then open the shutter for only 1 to 3 seconds, but keep in mind that this shutter speed makes capturing the lightning strike itself more difficult. You can also change the camera mode to “b” to use the bulb mode. This means that the camera will continue to take pictures until you remove your finger from the shutter button. This is most useful when shooting at night because it allows you to use shutter speeds longer than 30 seconds.

    Aperture–The aperture setting is affected by what is in the foreground. If there is nothing in the foreground that is too close, start with an aperture of f/5.6. If your image appears to be overexposed, stop down to an aperture of f/8 and go smaller from there. If you need to go as small as f/16, you may want to use an ND filter to reduce the amount of light that reaches your camera. If you have something close in the foreground, a smaller aperture will likely be required to increase your depth of field.

    Burst mode–This mode allows you to continuously shoot frames, increasing your chances of capturing that lightning bolt in at least one image. Set up your camera, take a few test shots to check your composition, and then keep shooting until you get lucky with a lightning strike.

    Don’t forget to check your images every now and then. As a result, you’ll be able to fine-tune your camera settings as needed.

    Composition

    One of the most important rules to remember when composing your lightning shots is to cover more sky than you have in the foreground. It might not look good in the viewfinder, but once the lightning strikes, that becomes your subject. You want the lightning to cover the majority of the image–60–80% sky versus 20–40% foreground usually works best.

    Because you never know where lightning will strike, you should usually make your composition wider than usual so that you can crop the image later in post-production. You should also think about what you have in the foreground. Some objects may obstruct the composition of your image, and while it may not be obvious at first, it will frequently become much more visible with the lightning strike.

As a result, before attempting to take a photograph, you should observe the lightning for a few moments. Consider how frequently it strikes, and which bolt is the brightest–is it the fourth or fifth? After determining the intensity, you can fine-tune your camera settings to obtain the best image.

    Pattern: This is related to the type of image you want. Do you prefer the image of a single lightning bolt with its stark, beautiful simplicity, or do you prefer lightning that scatters across the sky or shoots off a slew of smaller lightning bolts? Again, studying your subject will help you set up your gear to capture the image you’re after.

    colour-Finally, there’s the lightning bolt’s colour to consider. Lightning can be white, red, yellow, green, blue, or purple. The colour of lightning is determined by the atmosphere’s gases, chemicals, and other impurities, as well as the temperature of the lightning bolt itself. Of course, the most common colour is bright white, but if there is dust or pollution in the air, orange or red colours will appear, and hailstones in a storm can contribute to a purple or blue hue. Even vapour lamps in cities can cause lightning to appear bluish-green.

    The last thing you want to do on a rainy day is to go outside and start taking photos. However, you should reconsider because rain is a wonderful gift for photographers. The rain creates a plethora of creative opportunities (both indoors and outdoors). There is no such thing as bad weather in rain photography; only minor challenges.

    Shooting in bad weather provides incredible opportunities to capture memorable and artistic images. Most photographers may become concerned about the rain, and some may prefer to wait for better weather before venturing outside. Rain, depending on where you live, can completely transform the appearance of your town or city. It has the ability to transform even the most mundane scenes into something dramatic, mysterious, and magical. A skilled photographer, on the other hand, can make photographs taken in the rain look unique and elegant.

    Stay Dry and Protect Your Gear

    One of the first things you should try to avoid is getting wet, or worse, getting your equipment wet. When you’re cold, wet, and miserable, it’s impossible to take good photos. So bring a raincoat, waterproof your boots, gloves if it’s cold, and anything else you’ll need to stay dry and comfortable.

    It goes without saying that the first thing you should do before venturing outside is to ensure that you are prepared to work in wet weather.     Seek out opportunities with people who are out in the rain. You might be able to photograph a colorful umbrella, people fleeing for cover, children wearing colorful raincoats, and people drenched without umbrellas or raincoats. You capture couples walking arm-in-arm while sharing an umbrella.

    Night Photography

A colorful umbrella, for example, on a dark and gloomy street can create a powerful image. During the day, clouds filter out blue and ultraviolet rays, making colours more vibrant. A dramatic climate with dark stormy skies adds contrast and depth that would be difficult to achieve on a clear and sunny day.

    Shutter Speed

    Because falling rain travels at about 20 miles per hour (9 meters per second), you’ll need to adjust your shutter speed accordingly. Unless you have a dark or colored background to highlight them, the detail of a falling raindrop is difficult to see with the naked eye. So, try shooting with a background that will highlight the drops.

    Use a shutter speed of at least 1/1000 sec if you want to capture falling raindrops and freeze the droplets in your image. To capture the movement of falling rain, use a slower shutter speed of 1/60 sec. Slowing down the shutter speed will result in some nice long streaks.

    Aperture

    Use Aperture Priority to control the depth-of-field in your photographs. When shooting in the rain, a larger aperture (around f/2.8 – f/4) is recommended. Switch to Macro mode on your camera if it has one to get amazing close-up shots in the rain, such as raindrops on leaves.
