    Rehearse and prepare

    Sharpen your photography skills. Make sure your angle and focus are right, and your hands are steady.

    Keep different cameras for different shots – like one for the close shots and one for the far ones, or with different foci. It is better to use high-resolution cameras with a wide frame.

    Go to the venue beforehand and plan a mind map of where you will position yourself for the best shot. Notice every small and minor detail. Keep your gaze wide.

    Check your equipment. The most important thing – without which the show can’t run.

    Make sure your camera is charged, you have enough memory space to store all the pictures, the lenses are clean and properly placed, the flash is working. Take a stand (tripod) if you think you need one. Keep extra memory cards in handy.

    Work on the lighting. You might have to change it multiple times, from one venue to another. Outdoor venues will require low lighting and maybe no flash, but indoors, like the church, will require high lighting and flash.

    Make adjustments regularly. Clean the lenses occasionally.

    Backup

    Plan for the worst and hope for the best – just in case things don’t go the way you planned. Keep a plan B. You don’t want to let down the ones who called you for the task or ruin someone’s big day without intending to.

    Avoid technical glitches. Have an extra handy camera gear just in case something happens to the one you have. Have another well-experienced wedding photographer on standby, to back you up, or an assistant photographer if a professional is expensive. Be prepared for anything.

    If a situation does arise, handle it with grace. Don’t fret over it, give a quick explanation and move on. Don’t let it shatter your confidence.

    Get feedback

    It’s always good to let others judge your work. Some pictures might not look good to you but might look nice to others. Be open to suggestions and be willing to adapt to a new style or change your style if needed.

    Display your pictures. Let others see your work. The more pictures you have, the more you can display.

    It is very important to get the opinion of some professionals. Meet a professional wedding photography studio and a professional wedding photographer and show them the pictures you took. Get their advice on how to display it effectively.

    Don’t hesitate to ask for guidance when you need it. The more help you get, the better.

    Come on, let’s go! Accept it. Most of us have never handled photographic film. If you’re under the age of 35, I suppose that statement is mostly true. Those of us over the age of 35 have probably not touched a film in nearly two decades.

    We are all aware that the origins of photography can be traced back to the black and white photograph. Consider the 1950s newspaper photographers, with their massive press cameras and flashbulbs. Go even further back in time, and you’ll find the portrait photographer of the 1800s, who used 100-pound cameras and dangerous flash powder to expose the image.

    In the past, a black and white photographer had to use a special film, special chemicals, and a rinse-wash-dry cycle in two stages, which took at least hours and sometimes days.

    What is the primary benefit of photographing in black and white in the digital age?

    “Time!” In today’s world, you can literally take a black and white photograph, edit it, and share it with the entire world in a matter of seconds.

    But here’s the catch…

Always ask yourself, “If my eyes can see it, how can I make it appear in my black and white photo?” Then, post-process as needed.
    4. In the same vein, you should definitely make use of the camera raw format. These days, even some mobile phone cameras shoot in raw format. What is the significance of the camera raw format? To understand why, you must first understand the concept of dynamic range. The ability to reproduce “a range of tone and brightness values from shadow to highlight” is referred to as dynamic range. The dynamic range of digital cameras was far less than that of black and white negative film for the majority of the digital age. That’s getting better. Camera raw allows you to extract the most dynamic range from your digital image file. It outperforms the.jpeg format in this regard, among others.
    5. Develop your understanding of tone. The process of converting colours to grayscale is known as black and white imaging. Film photographers had to develop the ability to recognise how a colour would convert to a shade of grey at the point of capture. Most of us in the digital age create our images in colour, and only later in the post-processing phase do we consider how the colours will convert to tone if we make it into a black and white photo. If you start thinking about the conversion process early on – while you are taking the photograph – your black and white photography will improve, and you will be creating better work than your fellow photographers.
    6. Ok. So you’re going to take Section 5’s advice… When taking a digital photograph in camera raw format, how can you influence the change in colour as it converts to tone? You only have one primary tool at your disposal: light. Through brightness levels, light can alter how colours convert to shades of grey. If the colours in your scene are similar in hue or saturation, they will most likely convert to similar shades of grey. However, by adjusting how the light interacts with those similar colours, you can increase or decrease the brightness levels, resulting in a more complete, pleasing tonal range in your final black and white photo.
    7. Finally, and I know many of you will be offended by this, Presets and action sets for black and white conversion should be avoided. Your eyes and a histogram are your best tools for black and white conversion.

  • Choosing A Subject In Photography

    How do you know what photos you will take?  Are you going to a family reunion?  Are you going out for a hike and hope to see some wildlife?  There are many questions when it comes to photography.  You will want to have a basis of photography techniques to provide the best photograph and once you learn those techniques the subject will be up to you.  Most photographers whether they are professional or amateurs like you will have a medium they work with.  It is the same with other artists; you have painters, sculptors, sketch artists, and much more.  Photography is an art and therefore requires an eye for the right photograph.

    How do you know what subject you will shoot?  This is where your interests lie.  If you wish only to take pictures of wildlife then you will have to wait for the subject to come into view.  Obviously, you can go to a wildlife park such as the Rocky Mountain National Park and hope to find subjects.  Most often it will depend on the time of year.  Elk and Deer are more prominent when they come down the mountains to mate and eat.  Birds will always be available, but the type of birds will vary.  If you are in Alaska chances are you will have several chances of shooting a Bald Eagle, while in Florida you may find herons or cranes. 

    When you are practicing techniques you will have to choose your subject accordingly.  A lot of us are regulated to the area around us.  Landscape photography requires the use of the land you have around you unless you are going on vacation to someplace new.  This is another important fact in choosing a subject or symmetry in photography.  You are either limited or you have the whole world at your feet.  It will depend on your traveling abilities.  For now, we will stick close to home.

    Once you choose your medium you will then go in search of subjects.  The subject that speaks to you is what you should choose to shoot.  If a tree and the knots it’s formed interest you, you will want to check the lighting of the area.  Deciding which angle to shoot from will also make the decision on the subject.  The lighting may not be right for the subject you have chosen and the other side of the subject may not yield the best picture. 

    To choose a subject you will need a good eye for detail and observation.  Often the best subject is not the one you can see with a plain eye.  Have you ever looked at a tree and found a spider web hiding in the leaves?  If you look closer you might even find a spider.  A spider web can make a great picture not only because of the technique required to have the web show up in your photo with the silky threads, but also the pattern of a spider web.  We are fascinated with an organism that can create a symmetrical pattern.

    Again your eye is the best tool for finding a subject.  How you choose the subject will depend on what is available, the angle, and the light.  Moving slowly through an area such as landscape will help you determine the subject.  Looking under leaves or rocks is often beneficial to finding something new and different. You never know where you will find a picture just waiting for you to click a picture. Some people and animals do things that will never again happen and this is when you want to have a camera available. Most people interested in photography carry a camera with them everywhere they go. If this sounds like a habit, a real habit turns into a hobby and a possible income if you become good at taking the right pictures. As you get better at taking the pictures, you can then start displaying your pictures for others to see and possibly buy.
